The inception of palladium coin production began in 1967 when the Kingdom of Tonga (Tonga is a archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean near Fiji) minted the first palladium coin. Since then, a total of 92 different palladium coins exist. The majority of which have been minted by Russia, Australia, Portugal, and Tonga.

Today, an investor favorite is the Palladium Maple Leaf coin. The Maple Leaf was first issued by the Canadian government in 2005 with a run of 40,000 produced by the the Royal Canadian Mint.

The advantage of buying palladium coins is that they are compact, convenient to transport, and easy to sell.

The two most prestigious palladium bars in Europe are the Suisse PAMP and the Credit Suisse. They are available in 1 ounce and 10 ounce sizes. In North America, the Northwest Territorial Mint produces a 1 ounce palladium bar called the Stillwater. And finally, Russia, the world's largest source of palladium, offers a 100 ounce ounce palladium bar!

When you buy palladium bars from a respected dealer, they generally come refinery sealed in a plastic case with certified assay notice and a unique serial number on the certificate card.

The advantage of buying a palladium bar over the more common palladium coin often boils down to personal preference. For macro investors, the bars stack and thus are more efficient to store than coin bags.

You can also get high density palladium in a less refined form, commonly referred to as ingot, such as pure palladium powder, rods, granules, pellets and wire.

Palladium ingot demand comes from a variety of industries. About 60% of worldwide palladium demand is from the automobile industry for producing catalytic converters. Palladium is also used in jewelry, dentistry, the auto industry, watch making, medical instrumentation, the electrical industry, and the chemical industry for synthetic fibre manufacturing and hydrogen peroxide production.
